    What You'll See and Do

    Every package on this page is built from the same short list of stops. Here is what each one actually involves, and how much time it is worth.

    A steep stair climb from the anchorage to the ridge, about forty minutes, for the three-bay view that is the most reproduced image in the park. Dry savannah with no shade and no facilities, so carry water and go early if you want the ridge to yourself. Padar is not dragon-free: a 2004 survey recorded at least twelve dragons in the north, well away from the visitor route.

    A sheltered cove on the Komodo Island coast where the sand reads genuinely pink in the wet wave-wash, calm on days when the rest of the park is choppy. Bring a mask: live reef sits a short swim off the beach, which makes this one of the easiest shore-entry snorkels anywhere in the park. Treat the colour and the snorkelling as two separate reasons to stop.

    A three-kilometre channel of rubble, sand and scattered coral bommies, the largest dive site in the park, where those bommies work as manta cleaning stations. Komodo holds an estimated 1,200 resident reef mantas and they are present year-round rather than seasonally. The profile is shallow enough that snorkellers see the same animals divers do. Charts and older itineraries call it Karang Makassar.

    The UNESCO area covering Komodo, Rinca and Padar plus dozens of smaller islands, reached through Labuan Bajo and effectively nowhere else. Above water it is dragons and savannah ridgelines; below it is one of the most current-driven reef systems in the Coral Triangle. Almost nobody visits the park as a whole. You visit four or five specific points inside it, on a schedule set by boats.

    The only stop in Komodo whose start time is set by the animals rather than the operator. Nothing happens all day; then in the half hour around sunset a colony of flying foxes leaves the mangroves in long ribbons on its way to feed. You watch from an anchored deck because nobody lands on the island, and it is over in well under an hour.
